Bunkering is the process of supplying fuel to ships. For starters, is bunker fuel the same as diesel? Bunker fuel is quite different from diesel. The different types of bunker fuels are heavy fuel oil, diesel oil, marine gas oil, lube oil, and LNG fuel. Bunkering also involves all the logistics of distributing the fuel to the bunker tanks available on the ship.

 

How Much Fuel Does a Cruise Ship Use?

The amount of fuel that a cruise ship uses depends on various factors such as size, loading, and speed. An average cruise ship consumes about 30 to 50 gallons of fuel every mile for speeds of about 21 to 24 knots. However, ships cannot fuel on every port.

Bunkering operations are conventionally done at seaports where modern equipment and technologies are available to carry out the operations efficiently and safely. Nowadays, bunkering can also be done at sea when the weather conditions allow for it.

Bunkering Planning and Safety Checks

In the past, bunkering of ships used to be a low value and low skill activity. Over the years, it became a highly focused operation because of the ever-increasing oil prices and imperative need for protecting the environment. For that, proper planning, preparation, and security checks have to be done for each bunkering process. There also has to be a person in charge (PIC) for both the delivering and receiving vessel.

Planning

Planning is usually done during a pre-bunkering meeting. The meeting highlights all the risks and discusses the set plans and operating procedure agreements. All involved individuals must also be briefed about their designated jobs. The bunkering plan includes the estimated filling grades, required quantities, filling sequences, and emergency procedures, among other things.

Safety Checks

The safety checks are usually done before the commencement of the bunkering operation. The safety checklist has six main sections. The sections are bunkers to be transferred, bunker tanks to be loaded, checks by Barge, checks before the transfer, declaration, and record of repetitive checks.

Is Bunkering Expensive?

Bunkering comes at relatively high. Is it that expensive? Well, these costs can be attributed to the high cost of bunkering fuel and the intensive process involved. Since it is expensive, does anyone have special offers? Some bunker traders offer discounted rates to cushion customers from the rising costs.
